![]() ![]() For many people who do experience differentiated pupils, it is not a new condition and tends to be present from birth. While most of the time having unequal sized pupils results in little or no damage to one’s vision, for others the impact of differentiated pupils can be life-changing. The difference in pupil size will be less than or equal to 1 mm, and the condition may be intermittent, persistent, or self-resolving. This particular type can affect up to 20 of the population. When to consult your local independent optician Simple anisocoria (otherwise known as physiologic or essential) is the most frequent cause of uneven pupil sizes. This depends on the type of drug you have taken but in all cases our pupils resume to their regular size once the effects of the drug have worn off. Our pupils commonly increase in size when we are under the influence of recreational drugs which send stimulating signals to our nerves which can either increase or decrease the size of our pupils. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then you should get medical attention immediately. #UNEQUAL PUPIL SIZE WHY SERIES#This syndrome typically results in a reduced pupil size in one eye and is joined by a series of other symptoms such as droopy eyelid and decreased sweating in the impacted side of your face and eye. This syndrome is the outcome of a disruption of nerves between the brain towards the face and eye on one side of the body only. If you are experiencing a reduced pupil size on one side of your face it might be an indication that you are suffering from Horner syndrome. However, if you also experience additional symptoms, such as drooping eyelids or fever, you ought to seek medical attention as soon as possible. For some people who have anisocoria, there is no impact upon one’s sight, which is termed physiologic anisocoria. 3 The younger you are, the larger your pupils tend to be in normal light. Normal pupil size ranges between 1/16 to 5/16 of an inch (2.0 to 8.0 millimeters), depending on the lighting. This condition means that your pupils will not necessarily be identical. Your pupils also constrict slightly to look at close objects and dilate slightly to look far away. If you happen to notice that your pupils are dilating to different extents at the same time it might be that you have an eye condition called anisocoria. Here are some of the main reasons for why your pupils are different sizes. This is particularly common when other symptoms are present as well. ![]() This constriction then results in anisocoria. For example, in people with Horner’s syndrome, one of the symptoms is miosis, which is the constriction of one pupil. Normally our pupils tend to be identical in terms of when and how much they dilate, but for some people, a differentiated pupil size can be indicative of an underlying health problem. Pathologic anisocoria Pathologic anisocoria is unequal pupils caused by an underlying condition or disease, such as Horner’s syndrome or Third nerve palsy. It can be called Adies pupil, Adies syndrome, Adies tonic pupil, tonic pupil. After one hour there was dilation of the constricted pupil and improvement in the ptosis.Most of us probably don’t spend much time looking at the shape or size of our pupils. Visual acuity was 6/9 in both eyes and intraocular pressures were 12 mm Hg and 14 mm Hg in the right and left, respectively. Both pupils constricted to light and accommodation and there was no relative afferent pupillary defect. On examination she had a partial right upper lid ptosis (fig 1) and her right pupil, which was the abnormal one, was constricted and showed a dilatation lag. She denied any history of trauma, neck pain, weight loss, diplopia, or anhydrosis. She had visited her primary care doctor because of an upper respiratory tract infection and was unconcerned about her unequal pupil size (anisocoria), stating that she “has had odd pupils and a droopy right lid since being a teenager.” She had no ocular or medical history and was not taking any oral or topical medication. Correspondence to A Malem Ī 69 year old woman was referred by her primary care doctor to the eye emergency department with a dilated left pupil and ptosis of her right upper lid.The anisocoria is more noticeable in dim. ![]()
